CSA Box - September 3

In our CSA box this week: several types of tomatoes & peppers, yellow beans, thyme, edamame, onions, cucumber, summer squash, carrots, cabbage, beets, shallot, and beets.

For extras this week I picked up more onions, carrots, beets & mushrooms.

And, who could pass up a bag of 4 dozen ears of corn? We love to boil, cut from cob, bag and freeze! So far we have frozen about 80 ears worth!

We have now entered apple season, so G and I have been making small batches of applesauce - and he must taste test every batch. I have also been testing different recipes of apple chutney - SO GOOD with so many fall and winter dishes!

I got a big ol' bag of corn last week too that is now 12 pints of canned creamed corn, plus three pints of frozen corn ready to become some kind of corn chowder! Yum!

hey! i stumbled across your blog and i'm definitely gonna be a new follower! :) i WISH SO MUCH that we had more CSA's in our area (deep east texas). I discovered my passion for sustainable/local food while earning my degree in nutrition and now I'm determined to learn how to cook before my daughter is old enough to tell me that i stink at it - and i'm thinking this blog will definitely help! your newest fan - Leigh Anne

I adore your CSA box photos! I know you've mentioned a dehydrator, but I'm wondering what else you use for preserving/canning/freezing. Do you use a pressure cooker? A certain type of freezer bags? I just got a book from the library on preserving, and it seems like a lot of equipment. This year I don't have the time for it b/c I'm in school full time, but next summer I want to start doing all the things you're doing.
What are your most valuable pieces of equipment?

Hmmm... CSA looks like a really cool concept – I live in europe though, don't know if we have something like that here. How often do you gets boxes like that? Looks incredibly fresh!

I love the photos in your banner up top. Those fat cloves of garlic almost make me drool. :-)

of course he has to taste each batch... as we say around here, you have to taste just to make sure it isn't poisonous.

yummy! can't wait to see what else you do with your CSA stash
